Eine mir völlig unbekannte Welt eröffnete mir Vincent, Dissertant der Meteorologie, Fotograf und Blogger als wir uns zufällig in Wien trafen. Spontan war er bereit ein paar Fragen zu beantworten und Fotos bereitzustellen. Das Interview ist auf Deutsch und Englisch.

Stell dich doch mal vor!
Mein Name ist Vincent (eigentlich ist mein erster Name Claude, und dann kommt Vincent), ich bin 25 Jahre alt und komme aus Genf. Ich war immer schon an der Wissenschaft interessiert, insbesondere an meteorologischen Phänomenen. Deswegen habe ich mich für einen Bachelor in Geophysik eingeschrieben und mich dann für meinen Master in Paris weiter spezialisiert. Nun beschäftige ich mich in meinem Doktoratsstudium in Toulouse mit Problemen der Atmosphäre. Ich liebe die Meteorologie, aber ich bin auch interessiert an gesellschaftlichen Themen. Mein Fokus liegt auf Fragen der Wasserzirkulation, ein Dissertationsthema, dass ein Kompromiss zwischen der Wissenschaft des Wetters und sozialen Problemen – wie der Frage des Wassers als Ressource und der weltweiten Wasserknappheit – ist.
Meine Hobbies sind die Berge, Wein-Verköstigungen und Schach. Manchmal spiele ich bis drei Uhr nachts online Schach.

First of all, just introduce yourself!
My name is Vincent (first name Claude, second name Vincent), I’m 25 years old and come from Geneva. I always was interested by sciences, especially for the meteorology phenomena. In this way, I have chosen to do a bachelor in Earth Sciences, and then to specialize during my master (in Paris) and now my PhD (in Toulouse) about atmospherically related problems. I love meteorology, but I’m also very interested by societal problems. I have chosen in this way to focus about water cycle problems, a PhD subject which is a compromise between weather sciences and societal problems like the question of water resource and scarcity in the world. My other hobbies are mountains, wine degustation, and chess. Sometimes I play until 3 am chess online.

Du reist gerne. Nach welchen Kriterien suchst du dir dein Reiseziel aus?
Stimmt, ich reise gerne. Zwar habe ich durch mein bescheidenes Doktoratsgehalt nicht viel Geld, aber ich versuche zu sparen und gebe das Geld dann für Reisen aus. Am liebsten verbunden mit der Fotografie, eine meiner großen Leidenschaften. Letztes Jahr war ich in den USA, im Tornado-Alley (Tornado-Gasse). Das war für mich eine wirklich großartige Gelegenheit besonders riesige Sturmphänomene, die man in Europa unmöglich finden kann, vor die Linse zu bekommen.

Im April 2014 war ich auf der Insel Stromboli um Fotos zu machen. Das hat wirklich Spaß gemacht und war unglaublich zu beobachten.
Ich mag den Kontrast zwischen der Natur und der Gesellschaft. Diesen Sommer fand ich Ibiza sehr interessant. Einerseits gibt es auf dieser schönen Insel viele naturbelassene Regionen, andererseits ist der Tourismus ein riesiges Geschäft, insbesondere nachts im Zentrum der Stadt. Ich denke, es ist gut so eine Reise mal gemacht zu haben, aber es gibt sicher schönere Plätze als Ibiza um mit der lokalen Bevölkerung in Kontakt zu treten. So glaube ich, dass ein Kennenlernen der lokalen Bevölkerung in Entwicklungsländern sehr interessant sein muss. Leider habe ich bisher noch eine Gelegenheit für eine solche Reise gefunden.

You like travelling. How do you choose your destinations?
I like to travel, that’s true. Although I don’t have a lot of money with my modest PhD salary, I try to save money to spend it in travels most of the case related to the photography, one of my big passions. Last year I was in USA in the tornado Alley, and it was for me a really great opportunity to capture extreme huge storm phenomena impossible to observe in Europa. In April 2014, I was on the Stromboli Island to make pictures. That was really fun and incredible to see!
I like also the contrast between the nature and the society. In this way, it was really special to see the Ibiza Island during summer, a beautiful Island with a lot of wild regions, but an incredible huge touristic market in the city during the night. It’s good to make this travel one time, but I think that it is possible to find better than Ibiza to discover other ways to interact with the population. The interaction with people living in developing countries should be very interesting, but I never had the opportunity to do it for the moment.

Du bloggst selber und zeigst auf deinem Blog capricesdescieux Fotografien von deinen Reisen. Insbesondere die Fotografien von Stürmen mit denen du dich auch in deinem Doktorat beschäftigst sind beeindruckend. Wieso begeistern dich Stürme?
Die Frage ist gut, aber echt schwer zu beantworten. Richtig erklären kann ich nicht, wie diese Leidenschaft begann. Ich glaube ich war noch ein Kind als eines nachts ein heftiger Sturm in Genf tobte – dieses Ereignis habe ich wohl nicht vergessen. Ein Freund von mir aus Italien sah als Kind einen Tornado und geht seither jedes Jahr ins Tornady Alley um Tornados zu sehen. Richtig erklären kann ich aber nicht, warum mich die Verbindung zwischen Luft und Atmosphäre (Flugzeuge, Meteorologie, Astronomie und Exobiologie, usw.) so beeindruckt. Vielleicht bin ich ja eigentlich ein wiedergeborener Vogel oder ein Außerirdischer? 

You are a blogger and on your blog capricesdescieux you are showing photographs from your travels. Especially photographs of storms are incredible. Why do storms inspire you?
This question is good and not simple to give a response. I cannot really explain how a passion can begin. I think when I was a child, a very huge storm occurred in Geneva during the night, and I have this never forgotten. I have a friend in Italy who has seen a tornado when he was child, now he goes every year in the Tornado Alley to capture tornadoes.
But what can I not explain is why I love so much all which is in relation with  the air and space (planes, meteorology, astronomy & exobiology, etc ). Maybe I am not really a human but a reborn bird or extra-terrestrial guy? 

Muss man die Reisen zu den Stürmen planen oder sollte man ganz spontan aufbrechen?
Die Frage mag ich als Wissenschaftler, denn sie ist technischer als die davor. Also, das mit den Stürmen ist nicht so einfach, und es ist vor allem ganz und gar nicht einfach Sturmfotos zu machen. Zunächst muss man die Atmosphäre und die Wettervorhersagen verfolgen. Im Internet können alle „Sturmjäger“ detaillierte und sehr präzise Informationen über die Atmosphäre finden – zum Glück auch umsonst. Dadurch ist es möglich herauszufinden wann und wo Stürme ausbrechen werden. Es passiert ziemlich leicht, dass man an einen falschen Ort geht und dann dort ganz um sonst wartet. Ich glaube eine der wichtigsten Eigenschaften, die ein Sturmjäger mitbringen muss ist Geduld. Manchmal müssen wir einige Stunden warten bis ein Sturm ausbricht, manchmal einige Kilometer fahren. Aber wenn man die Stürme so einfach einfangen könnte, dann wären sie wohl auch nicht so interessant. Wenn man dann ein richtig gutes Foto gemacht hat, dann weiß man, es war das Resultat von sehr viel Geduld und Ausdauer. Wir sind schon sehr stolz auf uns, wenn wir so ein Foto hinkriegen.

Do you have to plan the journeys tot he storms or is this more a spontaneous thing?
With my scientific way to think, I can say that I like this question because it is very technical, and I’m sure that I can answer better than 1,2 and 3 :p.
So it’s not simple to chase storms, and it is definitely not possible to do easily storm pictures. The first think is to analyze the atmospherically conditions and weather forecast. With the help of Internet, all storm chasers have now the access to very precious information related to the atmosphere. This information is luckily free and let to understand when and where will occur the storms. But the major problems with storm travels, is that it’s impossible to be sure that the storm will occur… It is very easy to go in a wrong way, and to wait a lot of time for nothing. I think the most important quality of the storm chaser is the patience. Sometimes we have to wait several hours before the storm occurs, and sometimes we do several hundred kilometers to capture it. But if the storm was so easy to capture, I think there would be no interest. When a storm chaser has made a very beautiful picture, it is for him the result of very strong effort of patience and perseverance. We are very proud of us when we do beautiful storm pictures. 

Welche Länder sind besonders interessant für dieses Genre der Fotografie und Wissenschaft?
Ich denke Italien und Kroatien sind sehr spannende Länder, hauptsächlich, weil eine hohe Temperatur und Feuchtigkeit auftreten kann. Weltweit ist das Tornado Alley in den USA der beste Ort um gute Sturmfotografien zu machen. Inzwischen ist der Ort so bekannt, dass Menschen aus der ganzen Welt zwischen Mai und Juni dorthin fahren um Sturmfotos zu machen. Es gibt auch ein paar Typen die für Touristen, die einen Haufen Geld dafür bezahlen, solche Fotos machen. Neben dem Ästhetischen ist beim Beobachten eines Sturmes auch der wissenschaftliche Aspekt interessant. Wenn man sich das Video ansieht, sieht man, dass der Sturm nicht chaotisch ist, es gibt eine Rotation, der Sturm ist gut organisiert! Ich glaube mit Hilfe der Fotografien und Videos von Sturmjägern wird es in Zukunft möglich sein die Erforschung der Atmosphäre voran zu treiben.

Which countries are most interesting for this genre of photography and this field of science?
I think for storms, Italy and Croatia are two very interesting countries, mainly because strong temperature and humidity constants can occur. In the world,  the Tornado Alley in USA is the best place to go to make storm pictures. It is now so famous that people from all around the world go here in May and June to capture huge storms and tornadoes. There are also several guys who purpose to tourists to make storm trip during two weeks or more, and tourists pay a lot of money for that…
Outside the aesthetic aspect of the storm, there is also a very high contribution of Science understand, by observing a storm. If you watch the video, you can see that the storm is not chaotic, there is a rotation: the storm is well organized  I’m sure that with pictures and videos taken by the storm chasers, it would be really possible in the future to improve the Science related to the atmospherically field.

Du fotografierst den Sturm und nicht die Folgen des Sturms, das soziale Elend, die Zerstörung. Warum?
Stimmt genau. Mein eigentliches Ziel ist es den Sturm zu fotografieren und nicht seine Konsequenzen. Ich sah in Frankreich und in den USA einige der wirklich dramatischen Folgen von sehr heftigen Stürmen, aber es war nicht mein Ziel diese abzubilden. Für uns Wissenschaftler und Sturmjäger sind das soziale Elend und die Zerstörung in Folge der Stürme ein großes Problem. Wenn ich jemanden in solchen Schwierigkeiten sehe, dann möchte ich helfen. Es ist schwierig für mich Fotos von zerstörten Häusern zu machen, wenn ich daran denke, dass die Besitzer womöglich alles verloren haben.

You are picturing the storm and not the social consequences oft he storms, the misery, the destruction. Why?
Yes exactly, My main objective is to capture the storm and not the consequence of the storm. I have seen in France and USA some dramatic consequences of violent storms, but it was not a goal to capture them. Exactly like you say in your question, the social misery related to the dramatic consequences of the storm is really a problem for us: the storm chasers. Personally, when I see a person in difficult, I want to help her. It’s a bit complicated to make pictures of destroyed houses without to think that the owners of these houses have lost sometimes everything…

Als wir uns kennen lernten warst du auf einer Konferenz in Wien. Ich war beeindruckt, dass du dich alleine auf Entdeckungsreise gemacht hast. Machst du das öfter?
Reisen eröffnet für mich Möglichkeiten mit fremden Menschen in Kontakt zu treten, ihre Denkweise, die Kultur und deren Leben zu verstehen, das immer ganz anders ist als das Leben in Frankreich. Für mich ist es daher nicht unüblich, dass ich mit Menschen rede, die ich nicht kenne. Als wir uns im Mai in Wien trafen, hatte ich einfach Lust auf ein Glas Wein und ein Gespräch mit anderen mir unbekannten Leuten. Außerdem wollte ich ein bisschen Deutsch üben, wozu ich nicht so oft Gelegenheit habe.

When we met you were on a conference in Vienna. I was quite impressed, that you went to explore the city by yourself and just went into a bar. Do you do that often?
When I travel, it is for me a great opportunity to discuss with foreign people, understand their thinking, the culture, and the way to live is always different to France. So it is for me not uncommon to discuss with people I don’t know. When I went in the bar von Neubaugasse in Wien 2th May evening, I decided first to take a glass of white wine, and then to find people with which to discuss. I have seen you and your two friends, and decided to speak with you. It was also very fun to practice my German, I don’t have frequently the opportunity to do it !
